On February 17, 2020, he was suspended by the Buffalo Sabres after he failed to report to the AHL after clearing waivers, and the remainder of his contract ($6M for 2019-20), which was at its final year, was terminated. He forfeited the $1.6M left to pay for the rest of the season and became a free agent. On February 23, 2020, he signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning for $1.3M for the remainder of the season.
