Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the NHL played a 56-game season instead of 82. Base salaries were not pro-rated but 10% of $6,000,000 was deferred and payable in three yearly payments, starting in October 2022, without interests. Escrow for the season was increased to 20% and performance bonuses were pro-rated (amounts and targets to reach).

Prior to the season for which he had a $7M contract, was suspended by the NHL for 21 games for violation of, and lack of compliance with, the NHL/NHLPA COVID-19 propocol. With a contract for $7M for the season, he forfeited $1,792,683 because of the suspension. He returned with San Jose's AHL team in early December 2021 and on January 10, 2022, the Sharks placed him on unconditional waivers with the intent to terminate his contract, citing a breach of contract and violation of AHL COVID-19 protocols. He cleared waivers the next day and the NHLPA filed a grievance on his behalf. With the contract termination, he walked away from the remaining of his 2021-22 salary and $22M+ left in salary between 2022-23 and the end of the 2024-25 season. On January 27, 2022, as a free agent, he signed a contract with the Edmonton Oilers, for the rest of the season, for the NHL's minimum salary ($750,000 per season) and a signing bonus of $625,000. 2021-22 earnings: $1M salary for about 1 month with San Jose + $625,000 signing bonus with Edmonton + $400,000 pro-rated salary (4 months out of a 7.5-month season) with Edmonton = $2.025M.
