As the 3rd pick overall in the NHL and 38th in the WHA, signed an agreement letter with the Washington Capitals for a five-year contract to be officially signed later for a $50,000 signing bonus and a yearly salary of $50,000, $60,000, $65,000, $70,000 and $80,000 in the option year (According to the Society for International Hockey Research Newsletter, it was a $50,000 signing bonus and $330,000 over five years.) On September 12, 1977, realizing he could earn more in the WHA, he returned his signing bonus to the Capitals and signed a five-year contract with the Quebec Nordiques, in the WHA, for $625,000 overall. He declared that he'd rather deliver pizza in Quebec City than play in Washington. Expecting a lawsuit, the WHA announced that he would be barred from joining the league. On September 24, 1977, finally signed a five-year contract with the Washington Capitals for $100,000 per season.
