Per his contract, he was to earn $7.6M in 2019-2020. On September 19, 2019, he was granted a personal leave of absence by the Winnipeg Jets, for undisclosed reasons, and was later suspended for not reporting to the training camp. On April 17, 2020, the Jets and Byfuglien mutually agreed to a contract termination, foregoing his salary of $7.6M for 2020-21, without any financial settlement as part of the termination, and he became a free agent.
