After being drafted in the 4th round of the 1973 NHL draft, signed a contract with the Vancouver Canucks that included a $20,000 signing bonus. In early September, the NHL announced that he would not be allowed to play in the league or any of its affiliated minor leagues due to an eye injury sustained in 1971 during a junior game that resulted in limited vision for one eye. He never played in the NHL, playing in the International Hockey League and North American Hockey League in 1973-74 before retiring as a pro-hockey player. In September 1973, the Vancouver Canucks were asking him to pay back his $20,000 signing bonus, which he had used to purchase a house to his parents. Mackie intented to sue to keep his bonus and negotiated salary. The outcome is unknown. | |||
