- Paper: The Hockey Lockout of 2004-05

- Publication: Monthly Labor Review published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
In this December 2005 article of the Monthly Labor Review, published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Paul Staudohar (professor of business administration, College of Business and Economics, at California State University) analyzes the NHL’s 2004-05 lockout and concludes that it resulted in a settlement that was solidly in the owners’ favor with:
- A salary cap
- A pay cut for players
- New free-agency rules
- New drug-testing policy
- Changes in the rules of play
He contends that NHL players would have been far better off if they had accepted the league’s offer in February 2005.
