On April 14, 1989, he signed three-year contract as coach of the Quebec Nordiques, in the NHL, for CAN $150,000 (with additional incentives that could reach CAN $50,000) per year. The New York Rangers, who would have been obligated to pay his salary of about $225,000 for the final year of his contract, were released from that requirement. After the season, the Quebec Nordiques hired a new General Manager who wanted a different coach. There were 5 years left to his contract and he was offered other jobs with the organization. He elected to go work in the media in Montreal and to get out of his contract, he settled for CAN$50,000 over 5 years with the team.
